5 activities during the winter in Callantsoog

Experience winter in Callantsoog

What does the winter period look like in Callantsoog? In the summer period it is one of the most visited coastal towns in the Netherlands. This stretch of coast is also a beautiful place to visit during the colder days of the year. In this blog we write about a number of activities in Callantsoog and the surrounding area.

Winter beach walk

Dress nice and warm. Winter coat, scarf and gloves, good walking shoes and take a lovely walk on the beach and dunes around Callantsoog. The starting point of three walking routes can be found on the Zeeweg near the village church and the 'De Wijde Blick' apartment complex.

  • The 'Red Route' takes you along the Uitlandsche Polder, where a nature reserve was created in 2014. Via the roughened Zijperzeedijk and then back via the Luttickduin and the Heinollen.
  • The 'Purple route' first takes you across the beach and to the Zandpolder. You return to the starting point via the watered Venne, the Nollen van Abbestede and the bulb-rich Jewelpolder.
  • The 'Black route' extends the purple route. At the Nollen van Abbestede this route turns north over the Rechtendijk. You walk for a while on grass to the Noordschinkeldijk and then back via the Jeweldijk

More information about walking routes.

You can also go for a walk in the 'Het Zwanenwater' nature reserve. There are also three walking routes of 2, 3.5 and 5 kilometers. This nature reserve covers 600 hectares and has two dune lakes as eye-catchers.

Beach pavilions

Callantsoog is rich in dining options. In addition to the eateries in the village, there are also seven beach pavilions in and around Callantsoog:

  • Beach pavilion 'The beach tent'
  • Beach pavilion de Stern
  • Beach pavilion Vos
  • Beach pavilion Woest
  • Beach pavilion Salty Sigh
  • Beach pavilion 't Klavertje 4
  • Beach pavilion de Toko

Even in winter, these accommodations offer warmth and cozy places to enjoy lunch, dinner or a cup of tea or coffee with a pastry or a portion of bitterballen (or other snack).

Cycling through the dunes

The enormous North Holland dune area is a beautiful area for cycling. For example, from Callantsoog you can cycle all the way to Den Helder, only through dune areas. Or take a bike ride to Petten and discover the renovated village center and completely new sandy beach.

Climbing dune in Schoorl

Get nice and warm and climb the highest sand dune in the Netherlands. At 51 meters, the Klimduin in Schoorl is a challenge in itself to climb. If you are not yet warm, you can drink a nice hot chocolate on one of the heated terraces at the foot of the dune.

Is there a lot of snow? Take your sled up and slide back down at record speed!

Visit another coastal town

In addition to Callantsoog, North Holland has a number of nice coastal towns that are definitely worth a visit. Consider, for example, Petten, Egmond aan Zee, Bergen aan Zee, Wijk aan Zee or further north to Den Helder. Or visit one of the larger cities such as Alkmaar, Hoorn or our capital Amsterdam. An hour's drive by car, a visit to the village of the 'eel sound' Volendam is also worth a visit.
